Herbie

Herbie is a 1 year old long haired Chihuahua that was turned in by his owner for biting. He was placed in the bite observation unit at Animal Care Services. It was noticed that Herbie was limping badly and in obvious pain. ACS gave him pain meds while in his 10 day wait period. He was picked up by a rescue group that did not have the means to care for him, so ACS called SNIPSA to rescue him. Herbie had x-rays and was found to have a severely displaced fracture below the left elbow and a displaced right hip fracture. He was taken to surgery 6 January and it was not known whether or not he would lose his front leg because of the severity of the fractures. When surgery was over, Herbie still had his front leg,a portion of his hip joint was removed and he was neutered. Since his surgery was more than 2 weeks after injury and because the injury was so severe his front leg required an extensive procedure. It will be awhile before this sweet and gentle little boy will be ready for adoption. He must first go through rehabilitation with his foster family and be cleared by his surgeon.

UPDATE

Herbie underwent surgery to fix his left front leg, his right back leg and neutered. His legs were starting to heal, so it was very difficult to set them right. He is doing well, starting to hop around with out help and able to go outside to go to the bathroom. He is on kennel rest and will be for some time. He is being a very good boy, not fighting to get out of his kennel or play with the other dogs. He is however, becoming very spoiled in a loving way.
