Nina's New Life

Nina is a 2 year old Pit Bull that was rescued in a poor part of San Antonio where many animals are dumped and picked up by Animal Care Services and destroyed. The person living at the house where Nina lived was unwilling to care for Nina and had locked the yard gate, so little Nina was literally living on the street. Some volunteers found out about her and knew something had to be done as pit bulls are typically euthanized at Animal Care Services or she could suffer a worse fate at the hand of humans. So, Nina was taken into foster care with SNIPSA. Nina did great in foster care and we learned she was wonderful with children. We then put her through a three week obedience class and had her temperament tested-- she passed with flying colors!

There were some challenges though with Nina. We could not adopt her out to just anyone. With that breed, it had to be a responsible pet owner that knows the pros and cons of the breed. Nina was not good with cats and was not good with smaller dogs. She is also very strong and needs someone with a kind, but forceful hand. She was with SNIPSA for almost a year before going to the "right" home. She was adopted and returned twice during that year because of different circumstances. During her time in foster care, many volunteers fell in love with Nina. One volunteer would take her running on Fridays and to Starbucks for coffee and socialization. She was a social butterfly. She never met a stranger. Everyone would have to come over and say hello because she was such a beautiful dog. She was also sweet, loving and outgoing! People could never believe that SHE was a "Pit Bull!"

Then, in April she was featured in the newspaper and a couple saw her picture and wanted to meet her. They knew the breed and had been looking for a pit bull rescue. Nina was the one for them! They met her and immediately fell in love with her. She now lives in New Braunfels for the winter months and vacations in Northern Michigan during the summer months.

Pit Bulls have a terrible reputation. It is not the dogs that have created this, it is their handlers that have. While they are not the breed for everyone, Nina is living proof that there are good Pit Bulls out there and if they are correctly socialized, they can make great pets! There are many Pits that have not been as fortunate as Nina. If you are interested in adopting a Pit Bull or Pit Mix rescue, click HERE to see the ones for adoption through SNIPSA.
