Safe At Home

Always make sure your pet has a collar with identification tags to include their name, your address and two phone numbers. If you are out of town, have an extra tag made with the phone number for your pet’s caretaker or veterinarian. For those Good Samaritans who will stop to help, i.d. tags are the best way to make sure your dog or cat is returned home as quickly as possible. Having your pet micro-chipped is an excellent contingency plan in the event your pet’s collar/tags are removed or lost. It is really important for the chip to be registered so that your contact information is on file, and be sure and update this if you move. Make sure you have current pictures of your four legged family member on hand, too.

For those who have lost a beloved family member, there are some great and innovative ways to help reunite you with your pet. According to the Missing Pet Partnership website, you only have 5 seconds and 5 words to convey the message of a lost pet to drivers that pass a 'Lost Pet' sign. They recommend the following 5 tips to create a poster.

1. Make the poster GIANT – you want people to see it

2. Make it Fluorescent – you want to attract attention

3. Place at MAJOR intersections

4. Keep description BRIEF

5. Provide a VISUAL (i.e. photo)

This website also provides helpful information on “tagging your car” which enables you to broadcast your lost pet message while you are driving. You can also employ the use of a pet “Amber Alert” which enables you to reach an extended area via a phone message to neighbors. There is generally a cost associated for these services.
