Teddy

New Photos: 2/16/10

After 10 years living at the end of a chain, receiving sparse attention from his caretakers, "Bear" finally got a break - his owners decided to move, and he didn't fit into their plans. A concerned neighbor put out the word to rescues that there was a 10 year old chow chow in need of help, and connected with a group that gave him a longer chain, a dog house, and some medication for his eyes which appeared to be infected. However, word of this situation had gotten to Dogs Deserve Better, and spending even another night on his chain wasn't an option.

With permission from the home's new residents, Dogs Deserve Better drove out to pick "Bear" up. In all his years, he had never seen a vet; to ensure he'd get the best care for his various ailments, Dogs Deserve Better called SNIPSA, who agreed to take him in. He weighs roughly 50 lbs. He was immediately renamed Teddy, giving him a completely fresh start at a real life. Teddy came to his new foster home covered in mats, fleas, and mud; he had also never been inside before or around people, so he was a little shy and not housetrained.

Here is a photo of Teddy the day that he was rescued:

After just a few accidents indoors, Teddy learned that he was now able to go outdoors to do his business, but then return indoors to a warm, clean bed. Even after all the years of neglect and abuse, Teddy held no ill will towards people, and within days he was approaching his fosters with tail wagging. Teddy is Heartworm positive and in need of plenty of TLC to physically and emotionally recover from his previous sad life, but he now spends his nights on a soft bed and greets his foster family with a happy wiggle every morning. Teddy is very gentle with people, terrific with every other dog he's met, and doesn't seem the least bit interested in cats.
