Volunteer Application

VOLUNTEERS! Volunteers are the heartbeat of SNIPSA. We rely on the time, effort, and kind hearts of volunteers to accomplish the things that we do. Each year we rescue over 500 animals from dire situations off the streets and from local animal shelters. We spay, neuter, vaccinate, and micro-chip 1500 animals residing in low-income areas of town that would otherwise continue to reproduce and contribute to San Antonio's huge stray population. We do all of this because of YOU, our volunteers. SNIPSA volunteers average close to 1000 hours a month (this is not including the countless hours fosters give day in and day out opening their homes to our rescues) giving to the animals in our community because they believe in what we do. And we can always use more hands on deck!

While the opportunities to volunteer are abundant, there are two major ways you as an individual or group can volunteer with SNIPSA - adoption events and “Big Fix” clinics.

Adoption events take place two to four times a month depending on the time of year. They are usually scheduled on the weekends and last between four and six hours. Volunteers are asked to come out and walk dogs, handle kittens, and help with the overall marketing of the animals. Volunteers at these events will be educated about SNIPSA’s adoption policies and procedures and about the individual animals they are assigned to at the event. It is important for volunteers at these events to be comfortable talking with people from all walks of life and serve as an advocate of the rescue mission. There will always be a SNIPSA representative on hand to assist with answering questions and administrative details.

Big Fix Clinics take place approximately seven times a year. These events are a major undertaking and require a tremendous amount of preparation. During a Big Fix clinic we spay and neuter, vaccinate, and micro-chip over 200 animals in a single day at no cost to their owners. Volunteers are needed the week before each event to blockwalk and distribute flyers in the neighborhood targeted for that specific clinic, to set up the MASH style clinic the day before a Big Fix and to run the clinic the day of. Tasks on the day of the Big Fix range from registration/discharge (bilingual volunteers are always a plus for this job), transporting animals, data entry, assisting with recovery, washing surgical instruments, and clean-up.

Of course there are always an assortment of other volunteer tasks we need assistance with. Office work and dog-walking are among those. We are also open to any special talents you may have that will lend a hand to the animals in our community.
